Greetings. My name is Vijay, and I am the Lead for Player Insights and Brand Experience here at Bigfatphoenix Interactive. Today, I am very excited to talk about something that I find wonderful… Two days ago, our studio just completed two years!

And while my time has been brief here, what I really want to talk about are the amazing people. These fine folks have kept the show running long enough to see one of the most important landmarks in our studio’s history: the release of The Fairside Project. What is essentially the culmination of 1.5 years of design, studies, research, engineering and lots of back-and-forth Zoom calls… We are extremely proud that we are able to deliver the experience of social emotional learning games to you, and potentially many, many others.

And two years is definitely nothing to sneeze at. So I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to some of our passionate designers, programmers and artists to tell us what it’s like getting here today.

“When I quit my job to start BFP, I wanted to work on things that were meaningful to me, with people I enjoyed working with and in a culture that tried to fix all the things that I was uncomfortable with in typical company cultures in India. All of us in the founding team believed in this shared ideal of meaningful and enjoyable work, and a culture based on trust, respect and genuine team spirit.

In the two years since then, we’ve built and launched games, spoken to lots of kids and parents, raised some money, spent some money, had great days and terrible days, learned a great many things about kids, social-emotional learning, games, storytelling, and about ourselves. We’re in the middle of a very challenging period of a challenging journey, but I can say with pride that there hasn’t been a single day at work that I haven’t enjoyed.” – Anand “Senior Artist” Ramachandran

“I can’t believe that it has already been two years! At BFP I get to build stuff that matters while working with some of my favourite people. It’s technically my “job” but it is so much more than that. Over the last two years we have built this team, this product and this culture, all while living through some incredibly stressful times because of Covid19. For me, this has really reiterated the fact that work can be an empathetic space, a kind space, an emotional space and you can still get shit done. As we complete two years I am feeling incredibly grateful to be a part of this fantastic bunch of people. I can’t wait to see what the next decade has in store for BigFatPhoenix.” – Mourvi “Learning Oracle” Sharma

“Hello! My name is Pooja and I head Production at Bigfatphoenix Interactive. As I celebrate my 1 year here, BFP celebrates it’s second birthday, yaayy! I never thought I’d be doing what I am doing today in my wildest dreams! But when life gives you lemons…It did not take long to fall in love with this team! They’re rare, patient, fun, competitive, empathetic and so much more.

Therefore, it is not a surprise that we released The Fairside Project. We believe and practice what we built. And while it’s not been easy being so far apart in different cities and countries (pretty much the case for many others), we do our best to continually support and be there for each other personally or professionally. It’s been a great ride so far! Can’t wait to celebrate all the milestones with this team.” – Pooja “Production Virtuoso” Balan

“Projjal here, jack of all trades and master of pretending to be a master of some. They keep telling me it’s been two years since BFP started. It doesn’t feel that long, which lends some credence to the supposed aerodynamics of time in proximity to fun. And it’s been an undeniably fun couple of years, what with the amazing folks I get to work with on a regular basis (between whose testimonies, I’ve been reliably informed, these words will be sandwiched) and the awesome stuff I get to do every day, i.e. making games that help us understand ourselves and others a little better.

My line of work has mostly been about jazzing things up or adding flair, but my responsibilities at BFP have helped me to actually trust my judgement and improve my decision-making abilities. It’s an environment that lets me grow and challenge myself without the unhealthy stress factors that often accompany those things, for which my continued lack of grey hair is sincerely grateful.” – Projjal “Tech Savant” Chakrabarti

“Should I call it, “We are changing the narrative around work?” Or a place where “we all love being with each other?” We had no clue on what we would do, but one thing was certain and set in stone when we started BFP… No matter the circumstances, this will always remain as a place where its people are Valued, Trusted and Respected. We strongly believed that building the right culture with some awesome people will create magic of its own.

And here I am 2 years through this journey, surviving a pandemic and building a game with some awesome practices like Jackbox Parties, 4-day work weeks, Zoom coffee breaks, self-development Fridays, birthday-offs and bonuses… And many more to come! A lot of things have changed through this journey, but one thing remains the same: that we are all in this together.” – Pavithra “UX Queen” Sridhar

“Over the wonderful two years at BFP I got to witness a company start from scratch and orchestrate their own rules FOR the team and not for the work they did. I had the opportunity to redesign our rules and culture on how a company should be run and we stuck to it. The best part was, if someone found anything at all to be uncomfortable, we got to change the rules. It’s been a wonderful journey even personally to mutate from a Game Designer to an Art Director and how the company has been supportive of that is a testimony to its culture of letting our colleagues do what they love. It’s been an awesome two years of fun, games, conversations, rebuilding edu tech and more. In all honesty, I’m looking forward to the next few.” – Raisa “Art Maestro” Elizabeth Bastian

This is just but a handful of what our team has to say. To know more about them and others, check out the Team Page! Finally, to close things off – here’s a little something our team had made to kick our next year into high gear. Special thanks to the HBX team for helping with the animation.
